What is BYOD? The term Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) refers to technology models where students and staff bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning. A personally owned device is any technology device owned by a student, staff or guest, including smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and mini-laptops (Alberta Education, 2014)

Considerations for BYOD:
Advantages: * Collaborative Teaching and Learning * Decreasing ratios of technology to students and increasing student access to a variety of resources * Access to variety of programs and applications to support student learning * Students become producers rather than consumers of technology * Blended, Virtual and Asynchronous learning opportunities * Increased student engagement * Appeals to Digital Natives and how they interact with the world * Building capacity in teaching staff
Potential Challenges: * Equity and access for all students * Personal and Network Security * Allowing for variety of devices * Policy Development * Stakeholder "Buy-in" * Professional Development for teachers and parents * Health Considerations (such as screen time and physical activity/movement breaks) * Digital Citizenship Lessons for students
